The Beginning of Post Holocaust Antisemitism?

I have pasted below a submission made to the UN Special Committee on Palestine in July 1947. The text is a statement made by the Iraqi representative Fadel Jamali, it is long (a shade under 5000 words) but well worth the read. It shows how little the anti-Zionist arguments have changed in the last 70 odd years. It also shows the evolution of the antisemitic arguments that are now causing so much consternation in the UK and USA and includes conspiratorial beliefs that are now flourishing healthily in the West: “The Zionists have not come only for Palestine, which is mainly a barren, rocky and sandy country. Palestine is just…

Historian Benny Morris Attacks Palestinian Intransigence

Benny Morris is the Israeli historian whose scholarly work changed the way the Israel Palestine conflict is viewed. He coined the term ‘new historians’ which has come to include Avi Shlaim, Ilan Pappe and Tom Segev. These historians challenged some myths about the creation of the state of Israel. In more recent years Morris appears to have come to regret some of the assertions he has made, or perhaps more accurately, the way in which his research has been used. Some extracts from his latest interview in Ha’aretz: “The first intifada was violent but not lethal. It was a popular revolt. People threw stones and a few people were killed.…

John Cleese is Heading to Tel Aviv

From the Times of Israel: Plan for an evening of laughs and guffaws next autumn as British funnyman John Cleese, 79, arrives in Israel as part of his “Last Time to See Me Before I Die” tour, with a performance on September 1, 2019, at Tel Aviv’s Charles Bronfman Auditorium. Here he discusses the tour:

    The Brigade

I have been reading the book The Brigade by Howard Blum and was unable to put it down until I finished it. The book documents the activities of the British army’s Jewish Brigade at the end of World War II and in the following months. A unit 5,000 strong and mostly consisting of Jewish volunteers from Palestine, but also with a fair few Jews from elsewhere, Blum does a fantastic job of bringing this unit to life. He mostly tells the story through the eyes of three soldiers in the brigade and their role in hunting down Nazis and rescuing survivors from the camps and engineering their arrival in Palestine.…

The US Withdrawal from Syria: A Blessing in Disguise?

This piece (sharing the same title as this blog post) written by (res) Major General Gershon Hacohen for the Begin Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies is receiving some positive comments at the moment. For me it falls far short of the mark. I have pasted the conclusion below, the full article can be found here: “What Israel needs most from the US at the present time is political and diplomatic backing in support of its vital national interests, primarily 1) support for its continued hold of the Golan as a vital condition for its defense; and 2) cessation of pressure for further territorial withdrawals in the West Bank. With luck,…

The Nazis are Gone but Human Frailty Remains

I used to spend a lot of time killing Nazis. In my head. I attacked them on the streets of Berlin, stabbed them in Occupied Paris, gunned them down with my Sten Gun on D-Day. I looked out the window at school and saw their planes blacken the English skies and myself pumping bullets into those planes while sitting in my Spitfire. I killed most Nazis during French and Classical Civilisation I think. For a long time it was a great regret of mine that they were long gone by the time I was old enough to join the army. In my teenage years I wished I’d been born in…

Israel and Gaza Toe to Toe Once Again

Israel is currently experiencing the largest barrage ever fired against it by Hamas. In the wake of an undercover Special Forces operation Israel and Hamas are once again on the brink. RAW FOOTAGE: The skies of southern Israel RIGHT NOW. Dozens of rockets are being fired from #Gaza at Israeli civilians. pic.twitter.com/Iu6QwzUo8l — Israel Defense Forces (@IDFSpokesperson) November 12, 2018 Judah Ari Gross at the Times of Israel writes: The Israeli military deployed additional troops and tanks to the Gaza Strip border on Monday following the largest barrage of rockets and mortar shells fired at Israel from the coastal enclave in a single day. The army was reportedly given a…

What Mehdi No Solidarity for the Jews?

Cross-posted from my criminally underused blog Marc’s Words It hasn’t been a great weekend for Jeremy Corbyn or his Labour Party. Deputy Leader Tom Watson said: “This is one of those moments when we have to take a long, hard look at ourselves, stand up for what is right and present the party as fit to lead the nation – or disappear into a vortex of eternal shame and embarrassment,” In the same article they reported Watson’s comments in The Guardian dropped yet another bombshell: “Watson’s intervention came as Corbyn was forced to “entirely disassociate” himself from an organisation whose website lists him as a member of its international advisory…

    Israel’s ‘Victory’ in Gaza

Around the world Israel is under attack from headlines and tweets. In Gaza Palestinians are under attack from bullets. While questions are asked in the British Parliament and while journalists, television news pundits and the twitterati pound Israel for the number of dead at the Gazan border, Israeli politicians will be basking in the warmth of victory. Hamas did not pass. The border was maintained. Furthermore the Israelis sent a message to Hamas; It doesn’t matter how many people you send like lemmings to the border, we will kill them and do it in full glare of the international spotlight. We will not flinch. This is what the former head…
