There is no Return from this Madness

British universities are lost. There can be no return from this madness. Successive generations of students have been indoctrinated by Marxists with little or no challenge from Liberals, so it has come to this. Read The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn if you have the time. Read this briefer, but considered and detailed essay published by Index on Censorship a generation ago, coincidentally at the start of the final push by Lesbian and Gay activists for equal rights. Here’s an extract: On 23 May 1934, Pravda and Izvestiya published an article by Gorky declaiming, in language reminiscent of a political trial, that homosexuality was the result of pernicious influences from the Western bourgeoisie…

    Food For Thoughtlessness

Labour shadow cabinet minister Dawn Butler has accused celebrity chef Jamie Oliver of “cultural appropriation” because he’s marketing a Jamaican-themed recipe meal. “Your jerk Rice is not ok. This appropriation from Jamaica needs to stop,” she ranted on Twitter. She was soon joined by her colleague Clive Lewis who claimed Oliver’s product was a continuation of the ‘rape and pillage’ of slavery and a symptom of ‘structural racism’.  Both argued that Oliver somehow stood in the way of black enterprise. This “denies too many black people a fair shot at doing the same thing,” claimed Lewis – which was odd since Butler had copied in Levi Roots into her original…

    Cut & Paste Crime

The BBC reports that a (white, since it pertains to the case) teenager who posted some lyrics on her Instagram page by the (black, since it pertains to the case) rap musician Snap Dogg has been found guilty of a racially-aggravated hate crime because the inclusion of a racial epithet common in rap lyrics amounted to a criminal offence. Presumably the teenager was expected to censor the Snap Dogg lyrics before posting them instead of cutting-and-pasting them from any popular song lyrics website. However, if it’s unsuitable to be written in a public forum, then it’s definitely unsuitable for public broadcast. So why is the playing of Snap Dogg songs –…

Will Jeremy Corbyn condemn the shooting of Khalid Masood?

Will Jeremy Corbyn have the courage of his stated convictions and condemn the killing of Khalid Masood by armed police yesterday? Corbyn has stated on record that he was “not happy” with police or security services operating a “shoot to kill” policy in the event of a terror attack. In November 2015, Jeremy Corbyn was asked by the BBC‘s political editor Laura Kuenssberg whether he would be happy to order police or the military to shoot to kill if there an attack on Britain’s streets similar to the ones in France. Corbyn answered: “I’m not happy with the shoot-to-kill policy in general – I think that is quite dangerous and…

    Goods, Services, and Ideology

As a classical liberal, I have always thought it both wrong and dangerous to force private businesses to provide goods and services they’re ideologically opposed to or to people they’re ideologically opposed to. My reasoning is based on the primacy of Freedom of Association if we are to be regarded as free people, but also on the basis that I personally would not want my business to be forced to provide services to people I don’t approve of, like organisations with bigoted ideas about race, religion, gender and sexuality. I might wish to refuse to work for, for example, a conservative evangelical religious organisation. But unfortunately this means I have…

    “Two Terms” Trump

“Two Terms” Trump is the slug line of a new blog that’s been popping up on some of my news feeds since I posted on the so-called “Muslim ban” last week, so I checked it out. It is quite entertaining. Their mission, apparently is: A compendium of the Liberal and Leftwing stupidity, misjudgement and errors that will ensure a second term for President Donald Trump – unless something changes! But they say the intent should not be misunderstood. The blog is about pointing out these failings so they can be corrected in time to stop Trump winning a second term as president. It seems like a fool’s errand to me because…

    Travel Ban Trumps

Obviously President Donald Trump’s much-publicised travel ban is unfairly broad and most likely ineffective, and even more likely a cynical attempt to play an easy hand to populism. That may go without saying. Even so, it is slightly odd, though not surprising, that the ban is being portrayed not as ‘halting travel from 7 named countries’ but as a “Muslim ban” when there are at least 50 Muslim-majority countries in the world and of course significant Muslim populations in many more and these are not covered by the ban. So, wrong-headed and unjust as it is, it is not a “Muslim ban” at all. But this is a minor point…

UK Police now “stop and research”

Just look at these numbers from this Evening Standard report in which London Mayor Sadiq Khan announces dramatically that: “London today is more diverse than ever and I am incredibly proud that we don’t just accept our differences, but celebrate them. There is simply no place in our capital for hate crimes of any form, and we will not tolerate them. We must stand together, and anyone who witnesses or experiences abusive behaviour should report it to the police immediately.” Nothing to object to there really other than that it is a pointless bit of virtue signalling. Oh yes, the numbers… More than 50 events are taking place across London…

“Life and Death” Rhetoric and the Assassination of Jo Cox

We do not know much about Thomas Mair, the man accused of the assassination of Jo Cox. We know that he may have shouted “Britain First”, or “Put Britain First” as he fired the fatal shots, but we do not know whether he had any association with, or read the material put out by the far Right organisation that calls itself Britain First. We know that, over a decade ago, a man with the same name and living in the same town was reported as having ‘gone missing’ by a pro-Apartheid far-Right newsletter called SA Patriot. A Thomas Mair also makes an appearance in a newspaper in which he discusses his mental…

    Another Socialist Tragedy

The New York Times has published a heart-wrenching and shocking look inside a hospital in Venezuela, a country whose embracing of Socialism was hailed as a model by the Western Left, and which is now facing devastating social and economic collapse. It seems glib, given the scope of human suffering, to qualify that observation with “predictable”, but honestly, how many times does this have to happen before these grand social experiments are written off for the predictable failures they are? At this very minute there are still many thousands of Socialist activists in the UK, undeterred by these catastrophic failures, campaigning against our liberal democracy and capitalist-based economy. The Western system…
