Republican desperation watch

Speaking about the government shutdown standoff, Republican Congressman Marlin Stutzman of Indiana said:

“We’re not going to be disrespected. We have to get something out of this. And I don’t know what that even is.”

As Josh Marshall writes, it’s like something out of a 1970s made-for-TV movie about desperate hostage takers who are unable to achieve their original demands.

Update: Democratic senators have apologized to Stutzman for disrespecting him.

Yes, they were being ironic.

Further update: And now a Republican congressman (Randy Neugebauer of Texas) is reduced to bullying a federal employee for doing her assigned job at the World War II Memorial in Washington– a job made necessary by the refusal of Neugebauer and his GOP colleagues to fund the federal government unless their demands to kill a democratically-enacted law are met.
