From the Vaults: Guardian, January 22, 1977
On January 21, 1977, Mrs Shirley Williams, the Secretary of State for Education and Science in James Callaghan’s government, delivered a major speech in Derbyshire. This speech was published the following day in the Guardian and I have obtained a copy from the vaults. Below I copy a part of that speech:

Suicide Watch
According to the BBC live coverage, Moscow has suffered a terrible suicide-bomber attack on its subway system similar to the July 7th attacks in London in 2005:
Two bombs at the height of rush hour on Moscow’s Metro system have killed at least 37 people. Russian officials say female suicide bombers set off the [...]

Street protests alone won’t oust Iran’s regime
Saeed Rahnema, who was active in the labor and left movement during the 1979 revolution in Iran, is interviewed by Ian Morrison of the Tehran Bureau website about the necessary role of Iranian workers in the fight for regime change, and about Western “leftists” who put the struggle against “imperialism” ahead of the struggle for [...]

Gilad Atzmon’s New Adventures in Nazism
Oliver Kamm had a post up earlier this week about the disturbed “ex-Jew”, Gilad Atzmon.
Atzmon has been quoted approvingly by such luminaries as the Islamist Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey, Southampton University Law lecturer, Oren Ben Dor, and the New Statesman journalist, John Pilger. He was applauded at the Times Literary Festival. For some time [...]

Sunday Times Reports on “Nazi Scandal” at HRW
The Sunday Times has a blockbuster article that looks at the twists and turns of the Human Rights Watch saga.
Marc Garlasco, as you will all remember, turned out to be a collector of Nazi-era military memorabilia, who hung around chatrooms saying things like:
“That is so cool! The leather SS jacket makes my blood go [...]

Lambert’s Temple In Ruins
The Sunday Times, and Labour MPs Khalid Mahmood and Mohammed Sarwar bring the North London Central Mosque the worst news possible.

Rosenbaum on Berman on Ramadan, Hirsi Ali and more
In 2007 I posted about a long and important article by Paul Berman in The New Republic on Tariq Ramadan, Ian Buruma, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Timothy Garton Ash, the failure of intellectual courage and much more.
Berman has expanded that article into a book, and Ron Rosenbaum writes about it at Slate.

George and Sameh shmooze about Harry’s Place
Sameh Habeeb of The Palestine Telegraph website– which has been the subject of some posts here in connection with its blood-libel allegations about Israeli organ harvesting in Haiti– was interviewed by George Galloway on his Iranian regime-funded Press TV program.
Guess which blog came up for discussion (at about 6:00)?
Such nice things they have [...]

Smashing stuff
Mike Vanderboegh, a far-right former militiaman and current blogger from Alabama, appears at least partly responsible for a spate of attacks on local Democratic party headquarters and Congressional district offices after Democrats in Congress approved health care reform legislation this week.
“So, if you wish to send a message that [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi and her [...]

Trots for Sale, Slightly Scuffed
Remember John Rees and Lindsay German?
Of course you do. They were the credulous Trots who were purged from leading positions in the Socialist Workers Party for being gulled once too often by George Galloway and various dodgy Islamists.
What are they up to now?
Setting up a website and whoring themselves to the highest media bidders, by [...]
