A superpower who tries to do the right thing (lets ignore Iraq for a minute) is no bad thing. Without the US over the last sixty or so years, where would the world be? A better place? Churchill's statement was an attempt to reassure the American public that the greatly increased aid to Britain that Lend-Lease represented would not lead to open American participation in the War and that Britain with American aid could defeat Nazi Germany on its own. Total BS, but it worked and Congress approved Lend-Lease. Note: This quote along with FDR's pledge during the 1940 Presdential Campaign to the mothers of America, "Your sons will not be sent into any foreign wars" tends not to get into popular histories of WW II that were written in the last 30 years. It may be that historians do not want to have the Great Leaders of the Last Good War sounding like Lyndon Johnson in 1964-5 while he was esclating American involvement in Vietnam or now even worse, Bush Jr or Blair (Bliar) on Iraq! The current Israeli govt. will probably get away with this for the time being, but is building ill will with the US Govt. that may well find ways to pay the Israelis back in the future.
