Do you have any idea how idiotic and one-dimensional (or actually zero-dimensional) you “anti-imperialists” trying to keep the 3rd world in perpetual poverty sound?

Exporting a few thousand T-shirts does not generate much wealth, does it? How much wealth does a T-shirt in your demented opinion produce?

These statements are not anti-us or anti-imperialistic, just observations. And I’m certainly not the only one making them.

1) “Why Foreign Aid to Haiti Failed” by The National Academy of Public Administration, 2006 (link to pdf). If you’re going to review any of these sources, start here.

2) The CATO institute. Provided an analysis of US foreign aid during the Reagan Administration (Jan 1986). “American foreign aid has often harmed the Third World poor. In Indonesia, the government confiscated subsistence farmers’ meager plots for AID-financed irrigation canals. In Mali, farmers were forced to sell their crops at giveaway prices to a joint project of AID and the Mali government. In Egypt, Haiti, and elsewhere, farmers have seen the prices for their own crops nose-dive when U.S. free food has been given to their countries.”

3) Peter Bauer and the Failure of Foreign Aid PDF FILE. From the Cato Journal, Fall 2009. Discusses the failure of US foreign aid with special regard given towards how it has changed over the 20th century leading towards becoming a tool for furthering imperialism.

4) The Development Gap. Summarizes an article (original here) explaining how the US development banks (the IMF and World Bank) bankrupted Haiti thereby forcing the Haitian govt to accept reparations in the form of US engineering contracts and labor contracts.

5) From a Wall Street Journal article written this month. “For actual Haitians, however, just about every conceivable aid scheme beyond immediate humanitarian relief will lead to more poverty, more corruption and less institutional capacity. It will benefit the well-connected at the expense of the truly needy, divert resources from where they are needed most, and crowd out local enterprise. And it will foster the very culture of dependence the country so desperately needs to break.”

The same could have been said about Europe’s attitude during the Bosnian/Kosovo conflict.

People are fed up with spin doctors and politicians that take polls on what type of pet to buy and where to go on vacation.

There is some anger over the failure to produce results in Haiti despite plenty of aid. This is also the sentiment of an op ed piece in the NYT.
This does not mean we do not help rescue people in need. There is some discussion about corrupt politicians and a cycle of dependency.

Sorry, but folks in the UK who do not listen to these shows should not pronounce themselves experts on the subject. The Mark Levin show is hosted by a Constitutional Scholar who just says things the media elite can not grasp. The Sean Hannity show has plenty of opposing views including Charlie Rangel. Talk radio is infotainment and the political shows even in Montreal and Vermont tend to be on the right.

This is just about the limpest defense of anything I have ever heard. “His job is to speak and words came out of his mouth so you can’t blame him for that”. “He may have been wrong about that but other people have been wrong about other things so its unfair to single him out”.

Condemned with faint praise I’d say.

I asked you before to look up some actual numbers. Obviously, you didn’t. Haiti is utterly insignificant and countries with far less intervention from the US, with far higher incomes, with far higher standards of living, get far more trade and investment from the US. This works precisely opposite to the logic you would have us believe.

The fact that you won’t even post any material to back up your argument shows how much conviction you have. Klein/Chomsky types don’t like numbers or context, it confuses things when all you need to know is that it is always America’s fault, and America only does evil.

And the fact that you salute Comrade Zin, who celebrates Cuba’s communist monarchy, shows where your politics really lie.
