HandP,

Please explain what was antisemitic about the depiction of the religious Jew, and how you would suggest the cartoonist should have depicted him differently to avoid this charge.

Gene, Whether the cartoonist draws 'everybody' as a neo-Nazi caricature is irrelevant. So long as the author draws religious Jews in a manner embodying antisemitic stereotypes, it is antisemitic.

And Jimmy Glasga, you are conflating two completely different things. I didn't say that HP is paying way too much attention to a couple of ultra-Orthodox nutters (though I think that's true). I'm saying that the depiction of the religious Jew in the cartoon is drawn in a classic antisemitic fashion.

Why is that simple idea so difficult to understand?

Josh Scholar hit the nail on the head very succinctly:

"Yes, HP is publishing an article that attacks bigoted Jewish fanatics. What is it that you think that the delusions and idiocy that stems from other religions is bad, but your own shit doesn’t stink?"

Vildechaye, I think you're missing the fellow's point.

Institutions have a memory. Thus the Forward (unlike, say the Jewish Agency, or Commentary, or many other community institutions) is distinctly lukewarm with respect to Israel and unduly prone to publish every unsubstantiated rumour from unreliable sources, such as the former-CIA-analyst-hate-Israel club.

Thus it's no surprise the Forward would also join the hate-haredim club. It is distinctly not a big tent.

I didn't argue that it is not anti-Zionist like the Left. What I meant was that in my lifetime it -- like 99% of the Jewish community it was written for, Yiddish speakers, was not anti-Zionist at all. The key point in your discussion of the Forward was "in its first half century." WWII changed everything, especially in terms of Jewish attitudes to Zionism, at the Forward just as much as in the larger Jewish world. If you're saying that the Forward opposed Israel from the 50s through the 80s in an "anti-Zionist" way, you'll have to prove it, because i simply don't believe it. In a Jewish context, of course, it supported Israel without believing that all Jews should aim for aliyah and pack up for Israel. But that is hardly the definition of Zionism today. Nowadays, Zionism appears to mean supporting the existence of the State of Israel and its right to defend itself. And by today's definition, anti-Zionists are anti-Zionists, whereas the Forward would be considered Zionist. To argue otherwise is to be in the camp of the Jewish nutters.

vildechaye

I have no problem with tourists only this piece which ascribed the "ignorant American" label to those among whom very few may support the Israeli Right. The overwhelming majority of US Jews visiting Israel are representative of American Jews as a whole who want nothing to do with the Right, and even pile on Bibi because he employed conservative economic principles (which resulted in Israel having the best stock exchange and start up stats) and not obeying blindly the Obama directive of kicking Jews out of Jerusalem to appease their killers.
The Jewish extremists as they are so often called lumping in all settlers for example are from every part of the world not just America.
I met more of these "extremists" when I lived in Montreal and found them really scarce in Miami, NY or LA.

I do stand by my observation that too many North American Jews consider Israel like Westchester or some other Jewish suburb and act like they owned the place. Not to mention them actively getting involved in domestic politics with their time and money.

What is it that you think that the delusions and idiocy that stems from other religions is bad, but your own shit doesn’t stink?

Why is it you think that those disgusted by HP's obvious obsession by a tiny minority within a tiny minority, are necessarily Jewish?

Jews are less than 2% of the USA and less than 1% of Britain and France. The numbers of ultra-orthodox within that minority are even more miniscule. And the number of "bigoted fanatics" even less than that. Not worth the print any more than the odd mad dog or Englishman.

Even within Israel, I'm not sure I see why this isn't the Israelis' busness. After all, do they spend their days criticising odd Christian fundamentalists, Mormons, etc?

Why is it that you think anyone defending orthodox Jews must be Jewish?
