As soon as Prophet muhammad died his companions started arguing about who was going to be the next leader. This led to the Shia split. 3 out of the first 4 Caliphs were assasinated and things spiralled downhill after that. The Ottomans avoided some of the wars of succession by practicing fatracide i.e. the leader having all his brothers killed out of fear that they might contend for his throne. In Spain at one point there were 24 different kingdoms! all operating seperately. Islamists need to do some research before dreaming of univerdsal caliphates! Not centered in Persia, but all three of the great powers had Persian-style courts, and Persian/Farsi was the language of the court.
