The email importantly condemns Islamophobia, however in my three years at the university I have never come across even an inkling of such. If the university spent more time condemning some of the clearly unacceptable behaviours of the Islamic Society and the universities inability to promote social cohesion, I may not feel quite as resentful. Yet the fact that this statement is so quickly followed up by a grossly inaccurate, evocative slap on the wrist, for all its secularity… I feel quite let down by my institution.

Attempted Act of Terrorism

“Following the arrest of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab on suspicion of
attempting to detonate an explosive device on 25th December 2009, UCLU can
confirm that he was President of the Islamic Society in 2006-07. Since the
incident, UCLU has been co-operating with the authorities in all
investigations.
UCLU is disturbed by press reports claiming that UCL and the UCLU Islamic
Society were ‘complicit’ in the radicalisation of this individual and would
urge our members, the public and the press to refrain from being suspicious
of the Muslim community.
Extremist and violent behaviour has no place in UCLU activities, and we are
committed to ensuring that there is no platform for the radicalisation of
our student members UCLU is committed to encouraging free speech and
thought-provoking debate. We currently support nine different faith groups
and are dedicated to allowing them all to express their opinions and
practise their religion in a safe and non-discriminatory environment. We are
proud of the fact that our societies provide opportunities for our students
to openly debate a broad range of philosophical, moral and global topics;
this sort of vigorous debate should be encouraged, not restricted.”

We want to remind students that Islamophobic harassment and bullying will
not be tolerated on campus or amongst UCL students. We would urge all
students to report any incidents to their tutors, to Dr Ruth Siddall, Dean
of Students (Welfare) on dean.of.students@ucl.ac.uk or Nicki Challinger, UCL
Union Welfare Officer on w.officer@ucl.ac.uk. Below is also the contact

assistance required and experiences of prejudicial behaviour encountered on
part of students following the recent events or in case any student has

But it is the authorities who are displaying blind pig-headed insouciance. They have given up defending the values of this country. Stanislaw is quite correct in predicting trouble ahead – as was Enoch Powell.

At the very least Sutherland’s friend should have got the student’s name. He might also called in security to have him removed from the University’s premises (if such they were). I would have insisted on action, an interview with the student and a written record.

To just have “laughed it off after lodging a mild complaint“ is feeble.

There is no need to put a blanket ban on all forms of student dissent – just to recognise Islamism for what it is and ban that.

He didn’t ‘get’ that the execution threat was not a joke.

SIR – Thank you for the excellent “Seats of Learning…” article by Ruth Dudley Edwards [News Review & Comment, January 2, 10]. An expert in the school for Irish terrorism found no difficulty in identifying the signs in the parallel school for Islamist terrorism, especially since the British authorities have made it so easy for Islamism to incubate and breed in our academic institutions.

Once great seats of scholarship like the SOAS reduced to shameful seedbeds racial, religious and cultural hatred. Time to unseat those who have brought about this downfall – the academics, civil servants and politicians, and to cut the Islamist purse strings.

I would like to see your investigative journalism – so wonderfully employed in exposing what’s wriggling under the stones of Westminster – engaged on a similar rummage of the stones of UK academia. The Ruth Dudley Edwards article is a good start.

I see that the loathsome Anjem Choudary plans to lead a march of his radical buddies through Wootton Bassett. The Police have not received a formal request yet, so have neither approved or refused it. All it would take is for a counter demo by the EDL or BNP for a very nasty incident.

In a sane world, organisations like UAF would also counter demonstrate. But of course, fascists are by definition white.
