state-sponsored support:

Iran clerics rally to support supreme leader
Associated Press / ALI AKBAR DAREINI
12-Dec-2009
TEHRAN, Iran — Tens of thousands of hardline clerics took part in state-sponsored rallies across Iran on Saturday in support of the country's supreme leader, after opposition students earlier burned photos of him.

Hardliners were angered after pictures of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were burned in last week's protests and students denounced him as an "oppressor" — taboo-shattering actions rarely seen in Iran.

Khamenei's supporters consider him to be above the law and answerable only to God and any criticism of him is interpreted by authorities as insulting Islam and punishable by long jail terms.

Ahmadinejad's presidential longevity will probably exceed Obama's. I think that any strategy with regard to Iran must be based on the probability that Madman-iniran is there to stay.
The only way that Madman-iniran is going anywhere, is if the US invades and removes him from power. I think that for the time being,at least, thare is zero chance of that occurring.

It’s clearly the endgame for the current Iranian regime.

I'm not so sure. A regime so bloodthirsty that it gave young children plastic keys to heaven, and sent them to detect land mines with their bodies or packed them with sachel bombs and threw them under tanks is capable of simply slaughtering all (or say 1/3) of the educated youth and continuing as if nothing was ever wrong.

The reaction of the Washington, controlled by the Democrats would probably be something like:
Joy that they proved themselves inferior to us. They used violence and we didn't. See, we're better than Iranians and Republicans.

It would never occur to them to help. Vacuous, meaningless, symbolic moral superiority being the only virtue now, if you don't count the secret important virtue, laziness.

It's clearly the endgame for the current Iranian regime. The question is will they do something stupid like start a war with Israel to cling on to power? Beasts are most dangerous when cornered...

Gary Sick is correct, imho.
The extreme of the extreme have taken over.
Sadly, the statement " they're too stupid to realise that in an educated country, money and guns aren't enough " is just plain wrong. Those in Iran who depend on that thought are in for a brutal awakening.
My hat's off, or my head scarf is on, in admiration for those brave people who oppose the regime.

That was a mind boggling idea.

Gives me more hope that these protesters really have a future.

Ahmadinejad has massive support in Iran. The opposition to the regime comes from educated middle-class people in Tehran. But the poorly educated rural masses suppport him and they are the majority of the population.

Of course, the ayatollahs are divided. But there is no evidence to suggest that Ahmadinejad and Khameni have fallen out.

Gary Sick concludes: "How do you engage with Iran when there is no reliable address in Tehran?"

I think that he is wrong. Ahmadinejad and Khameni are still running the show.

When even dressing male dissidents in women's clothing backfires, you know the regime is in deep trouble.
