I’m not sure how you know that political debate is more robust in Britain than in the U.S. and I’m confused as to why you point out that the religious right is miniscule in Britain. Is that germane?

From articles I’ve read about little old ladies being visited by the Police for making anti-homosexual statements to Hotel owners having massive problems for perceived negative comments to Muslims, it appears obvious that Brits do not have free speech. Or rather, some have and some don’t.

The fact that many people on this blog have mentioned contacting the police about Mr. Sullivan proves my point. In the U.S., if someone suggesting calling the police over his rant, people would laugh.

Not sure what you mean by the “shouty right-wing stuff”. Calling Americans right-wing is no doubt an insult, but they would take that as a compliment. As far as the robust political debate in Britain goes, you as a citizen don’t have much sway in the nanny state. You get to vote once in a while and the crooks who masquerade as politicians take your hard-earned money, use it to buy immigrant-block votes and then send the police over to your house when you try to object.

From this side of the pond, that is Orwellian. It’s just that as they’ve eased you into it, you don’t realize it.

I am going to raise this with Baptists friends and discover what they know. I certainly think the Baptist Church in the United Kingdom should have the opportunity to respond. Frankly, the matter seems beyond dispute. One cannot think this is a case of clever editing or ‘words taken from their context’. Hideous stuff.
