The lack of killfiles, a device unique to Usenet. Killfiles are DIY, personally customized, moderation, the best kind. Make it such that you don’t even see what you’ve chosen to ignore, as if it doesn’t exist.

Now, even with killfile support in their newsreaders, some people on Usenet didn’t use them, on principle. Instead, they simply disciplined themselves to ignore what they didn’t want to engage. That, too, is possible. Train yourself not to see what you’d like to ignore.

Which is the best that can be done on these web-based facilities. Just don’t rise to the flamebait (and that includes complaining about it.)

To have a debate means of course to be open to distinct perspectives. Regarding the content of your comments, anyone who regularly follows the posts here at HP is necessarily conscious of the problem of Islamic extremism, as well as the problem of anti-Semitism and the rise of the far right in Britain and elsewhere (which are the subjects that compose the majority of posts) and how they are challenging the core values of liberal democracies.

For instance, while in principle I have nothing against people using nicknames, we can see how some hide behind anonymity to express their hatred and frustration, in a tone that they wouldn’t use if they assumed their real identity…

I’ve been commenting here and following this blog for almost two years, and even I can see how the environment is being degraded because of the invasion of bigots and cowards.

Instead of a stimulating debate, what I find here is a show of paranoid people sublimating their fear through hatred.

I don’t envy the position of the blog’s administrators, really, because this is, in large measure, the result of the success of HP. But I see that other bloggers that were regularly present on comments are not largely absent. We can see that they still read the posts, because sometimes they link them and comment about them on their own blogs. So, overall, the balance is negative.
