I don’t mind people using the term “soccer,” which has been said is an English-derived contraction of “association football” in the same way that “rugger” is of “rugby football,” and dates from the same period. Clearly with the growth of football as a global sport the need to specify which particular football you mean has ceased to be necessary, hence the fact that we have FIFA, the FA, UEFA etc, and no-one ever has to ask “but what type of football does the F stand for?” because it’s bloody obvious.

But I’m happy for people still to say “soccer.” It generally indicates that they hail from somewhere with its own variant such as Australian rules, Gaelic etc, which is more prominent than our version. This is good, it means they’re less likely to beat us in a penalty shoot out.

NFL games go on for 3 hours, so they have time to spare. And video replays do NOT improve the spectacle. Most replays seem to involve quarterback sacks and whether the pass was incomplete drone drone drone …

Larkers, my point was that I don’t think the players there-and-then remonstrated with the ref after Maradona’s hand-ball – nor was Maradona as apologetic as Henry seems to have been. Plus, dissemination of such images has moved on in the 23 years since then, and people are now playing this scene on their ‘phones.
