Tea Party: the movie

We’ve posted here about the anti-Obama “Tea Party” movement, including the 9/12 rally in Washington featuring a heavy dose of wingnuttery.
Now you can watch “Tea Party: The Documentary Film,” which “follows the struggles of five grassroots individuals and their transformation from home town rally goers and rally organizers to national activists in the 912 [...]

Kammo on Swiss Populism

Oliver Kamm has an excellent comment piece here:
The Swiss vote to ban the construction of minarets fits a wider pattern of populist protest in Western Europe. Parties of the Right have campaigned vigorously against the supposedly alien influence spread by Muslim populations.
That movement should be sharply distinguished from the secularist and liberal defence of the [...]

Guess Whose Fault It Is In Honduras?

This is a cross post by Eamonn McDonagh of Z Word
Readers are no doubt aware that President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras was overthrown by a coup d’etat on the 28th of June and that he currently languishes in the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa. They may also know that the coup leaders organized a national election [...]

SPSC and Beitar Jerusalem: same coin, different sides

The gang of fools known as the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, in unfortunate and baffling cooperation with the Scottish Trades Union Congress, is planning a protest when the HaPoel Tel Aviv soccer club plays Glasgow Celtic on Wednesday December 2.
Hillel Schenker, a leftwing Israeli, last year provided a basic explanation of Israeli professional soccer for [...]

Hizb ut-Tahrir and the 1997 Redress

This is a guest post by Raziq (former member of Hizb-ut-Tahrir)
Many people are not aware that Hizb-ut-Tahrir is split into two groups.  Both groups oppose each other but go by the same name.  So how did this situation come about?
In 1997 some members of Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) claimed to have removed the then leader Abdul Qadeem [...]

SWP condemns Respect “princes of darkness” and “reformist misleaders”

This is a cross post by MoreMediaNonsense

There’s lots of interesting stuff here in the SWP pre conference bulletin about the SWP and the Respect debacle, eg on page 45 :
“Instead of mobilising more radical younger Muslims against these reformist misleaders, Respect often helped re-enforce these leaders’ control over Muslim youth.”
“misleaders” – is that a new [...]

Ed Balls Is Not Fit To Be Secretary of State for Schools

Imagine, if you will, that the Liberal Democrats discovered that a school that was receiving government funds had two BNP members as its trustees, one of whom was Nick Griffin’s wife. Imagine that its head teacher turned out to be a BNP activist who had written inflammatory and sectarian articles in BNP News, in which [...]

Defend Religious Freedom in Switzerland

The depressing news today is that 57% of those participating in the Swiss referendum have voted to ban the construction of minarets.
Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said the result reflected fear of Islamic fundamentalism.
“These concerns have to be taken seriously. However, the Federal Council takes the view that a ban on the construction of new minarets [...]

Combat 18 claims responsibility for terrorist attack

This is a cross post by Edmund Standing

Combat 18 Russia is claiming responsibility for the recent terrorist attack on a passenger train.
Many analysts are unconvinced. If it turns out the C18 claim is false, this is nonetheless a worrying development insofar as C18 Russia is clearly seeking to position itself as an active terrorist organisation.
Here’s [...]
