In response to Sue R's question about how we got into this state; because 20 years ago police weren't so concerned or capable of investigating paedophilia, and victims were either told to stop lying or just quit bitching.

Secondly, 20 years ago, there wasn't an internet, so the crimes of George and others wasn't easy to commit.

As for King Creole's comments about the press think we're all perverts who want to read about paedophilia... perhaps you should console yourself with a regular copy of "Fluffy Cat News Daily"?

It's a bit like asking "how did we get into this state" regarding nuisance phone calls... 100 years after Mr Bell invented the telephone.

Regardless of how many checks are created by any Government, there will always be people who sexually abuse children. All that can be done is to minimise it somehow via some kind of legislation or advice while trying to balance it against the needs/rights of the wider population.

There are two different systems for checks. The one concerned with checking people working with children is the main culprit. This was introduced for two reasons, the first being to protect Headteachers who could be sued or accused of professional neglect! How was a CEO. of a school supposed to know the background of a propsective employee? The other was to create a multi million pound industry which now surpass the GDP of a small country and enriches share holders for easy economic investment. Because of these two factors it never really aimed at protecting children!

How did we get into this state?

We elected the likes of the Harperson and Jackie Jackboots with their 'Nannie knows best' attitudes and now we're sick, sorry and tired of them.

Will it be any better under the Bullingdon Club?

I rather doubt it, except that Hedge Fund foxhunters will pursue asylum-seekers across the South Downs with murderous cries of glee.

Although the statement doesn't really help.

They are no different to other fully supervised facilities, like schools, playgroups or nurseries - where adults are not allowed to stay.

Historically, most schools were very welcoming of parents (historically means ``from about 1980 onwards''). Playgroups? I often stayed for a few hours, pottering around and helping and chatting up/to the yummy mummies. Nurseries? Depends what you mean, but classic state nursery schools again tended in my experience (about ten years ago) to be very welcoming. If the argument is ``it doesn't matter that we're hysterical in this case, because we're hysterical in these other cases as well'' then it doesn't seem a very good one.

An old (horse) chestnut returns... http://www.macclesfield-express.co.uk/news/s/1179401_kids_told_wear_goggles_to_play_conkers

Seems to me there's been a lot of loosely drafted legislation been hitting the statute books, the press are obviously having a field day with silly season stories but I reckon people really are justified in being more worried about inadvertantly breaking some law or another while going about their normal business in a sensible manner these days.

Well Sue R we got into this state because the press thinks we're all perverts who somehow delight in reading stories about paedophilia.

I suspect that's not what you meant though. So instead let's blame er... [spins Wheel of Moral Panic]... The Teengage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Yeah! Encouraging teens to go into sewers for their special "training" at the hands of an "old master" with the lure of pizza! It's a paedo-manifesto. Splinter must be chemically castrated immediately. Although any teenage boys using nun-chucks will probably castrate themselves first.

This lunchtime two of the top stories on the television news were about paedophiles; the Vanessa George story and the Scottish paedophile ring. How did we get into this state?
