What a remarkable and moving story.

Let's wait for the Hollywood blockbuster complete with every Jew portrayed as a passive intellectual and every German a violent, goose-stepping psychopath.

Angelina Jolie would play Sendler, Brad Pitt would be a ‘Jewish’ love interest, and Jewish-American soldiers would save the day.

What an incredible story.

The fact she was overloooked in favour of Al Gore speaks volumes about the mentality of the Nobel committee.

In 1965 Sendler was recognized by "Yad Vashem" as one of the Righteous among the Nations. In 1991 she has received honorary citizenship from Israel. I am at least glad to see that her heroism has been properly acknowledge by the Israeli people.

I don't think she would have minded that much. In her own words - “Every child saved with my help and the help of all the wonderful secret messengers, who today are no longer living, is the justification of my existence on this earth, and not a title to glory.”

By the book the peace prize is strictly for achievement within the previous 12 months, though seeing as the committee occasionally throws out the rule book and makes 'lifetime achievement' type awards
I wonder why she wasn't nominated earlier, there's of course a large number of people eligable to nominate for the peace prize.

I agree, Monty. I think the Irena's of this world give us hope.

Gene -

"Surely it’s possible to honor this extraordinary woman without pitting her against Al Gore."

Well, obviously not. The poor woman was 98. Al Gore can't be much past 60. Whether or not one thinks much of Gore (and I don't) they might have let him step back a bit. After all, he's still alive. Irena Sendler isn't.
