Different person, same name. This Alison Weir is the former editor of a very small newspaper in Marin County California who now tours the U.S. giving anti-Israel talks and interviews.

The other Alison Weir writes popular histories of the Tudor era.

Counterpunch are scum – and their views represent the worst combination of the Far Right and the Far Left – a modern version of Strasser and the Red-Brown Alliance. They are Stalinists with a kind of Stalinist antiZionist anti-semitism which is in substance, if not terminology, very similar to the Islamist and Far right versions of anti-semitism.

If I have to admit that they are of the Left it does not contaminate my left-liberal views any more than Hitler contaminates Angela Merke’s modern Christian Democracy of the centre-right.

The one difference is that for the Left anti-semitism is a deviation from the core and genuine principles (as opposed to the beliefs and actions of individuals who are of the Left) of universalism and opposition to racism (principles which some of the new anti-Zionst anti-semites still pay lip service to) and is ultimately inconsistent with it. For the Right, or at least the Hard right univerasalism and anti-racism are anathema.

In this sense, David T is absolutely right to place Counterpunch on the Far Right.

Alexander Cockburn is a British journalist who has worked in America since the 1970s. He is the son of the Stalinist journalist Claud Cockburn (rhymes with “slowburn.”)

Claud appears in Homage To Catalonia, I believe, as Frank Pitcairn. Alexander is the brother of Patrick Cockburn who is an excellent journalist.

The funny bit is that Workers’ World (‘anti-imperialists’ pro-CPC etc) took this ‘leak’ seriously. They published a refutation of any such alliance. But, wait for it, said – on Leftist Trainspotters – that the idea may have come from Galloway and them co-operating around the Convey to Gaza.
