RE: A Republican Nobel Laureate. Ron Paul. Get those nominations in.
That means you, John Bolton. Or have I missed something?

Question: Would Loon-dsay sound any more sane if he were coherent?

RE: Hey kids! No need to work hard and study boring things like physics or chemistry in order to get a Nobel Prize. You can get the very same award just for being the most popular Prom King!

Israeli nurse, this is just silly. Obama did not win the chemistry/physics/medicine nobel prize, for which you absolutely do have to work hard and study "boring things." Now the peace prize, that's a very political little award; is Obama getting it for, in the Nobel committee's words, "extraordinary efforts eto strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," any worse than, say, the 2001 award to a) the United Nations and b) Kofi Annan. I don't think so.

I beg to differ with most of the opinion here, in that I'm very pleased he won the NPP. There are lots of motivations when handing out this particular prize, and this year it was obviously to send a strong message: that the world appreciates that Obama's world view differs substantially from Bush's, and that he will act less unilaterally. The prize also reflects the new hope in the world created by Obama's election. I was at a hospital in Montreal the morning after the election, and the atmosphere among workers -- mostly immigrants and most of them people of one colour or another -- was electric. Sure, he hasn't done much in his first 9 months, but one could argue, and i am, that by changing the focus of U.S. foreign policy he's already done a lot.
In short, I and millions of people around the world are pleased he won the award. That being said, I sure hope he doesn't pull troops out of Afghanistan. Contradictory... yes. But life on this planet isn't always rational.

It really is hard to believe that Norwegians are descended from Vikings.

Oh, you mean they're descended from the ones who stayed at home?

That explains a few things!

You hear all this boilerplate repeated all the time by pundits; it appears to be self-validating, rather than have its own meaning.

So Obama is "fostering a new climate of international diplomacy."
Is he? Is giving speeches and being liked the same thing as diplomacy? And has anyone ever achieved anything diplomatically by just being conciliatory and accomidating? Conversely, can anyone name anything Bush did regarding war and peace that was done unilaterally? Carter unilaterally tried to persuade arab nations to stay out of the gulf war coalition. Clinton didn't seek anyone's approval for several bombing raids.

Actually, I think Obama has less ambition than many presidents regarding international relations. He sounds the dogwhistle all the time about how he is going to be different than Bush's neo-conservativism, but I don't think he's particularly good at realpolitik either.

The Kalahari Pigmy Chameleon (Upbamas arsus) has never declared war in the 5 billion years of it existence and can change colour instantly according to it background. This award says more about the small majority of Nordic nerds who have hijacked their peoples conscience and bank account more than anything else.

Anyone care to join me in promoting the idea of a “Nobel Prize for Being Black”?</i>

Apparently it's already been awarded.
