European Union and USA and media have to strongly voice out their anger against the Iranian regime concerning the apostasy law. There was an American/Iranian journalist who was released from the infamous Erin prison some time back upon the personal intervention of American personalities. Why can't the same pressure be put on the Iranian president Moussavi for the release of Myriam and Marzieh and other prisoners from minority groups who are imprisoned because they are not Muslims or are embracing democracy.
I am happy to be a Christian that the Lord has saved me by grace, forgiven my sins and made me His child, though unworthy. It pains me to see my brothers and sisters suffering for Christ in other countries where their faith is not respected.

Lauren, I agree with you about the tax breaks, but I would apply it to all religions, whether they meet your first criterion or not. I believe in a strict, strict separation of religion and state - as in no mixing it at all, and no special rules for religions.

The only people who should pay for a religion should be its adherents.

I can sort of see both sides in this discussion of whether all religion is bad. I think ultimately we would be better off without any religion at all. But at the same time, I can accept that there may be things I don't understand about the usefulness of religion to other people, and even if they are all bad, they aren't all equally bad.

A 16th c. Unitarian minister once said, "We need not think alike to love alike."

I think it is a good test statement to distinguish between acceptable religions and unacceptable ones. If in a religion a person can't make the above statement without it being a contradiction of the precepts of the religion, then the religion should be treated as a destructive cult rather than as a religion. Why should an organization that preaches that I deserve eternal torment for my lack of belief get tax breaks?

Your right. That is why I am for the separation of Church and State politic. Religious faith is fine but unfortunately men or woman who lust for power will use anything that can be used to gain them that power, Religion is prime cover, it makes lust and creed saintly. Invoke God and you are always right. Give them a guilty conscience, play on their fears and passions, give them only one door of Hope , yours. Power is in your hands.

Pure religion and undefiled ( a quote from the NT no less) is very hard to find.

I think Obama is refusing to stick up for any of what used to be American principles, not out of some reverse psychology to help the Iranians, but because he's got his finger on the pulse of a generation that doesn't give a flying fuck about anyone.

Once George Bush was seen actually possessing democratic principles and acting on them on the world stage, that was the end of the support for democracy and liberalism on the left.

Apparently most people are only in politics because they hate their opponents, not because they believe in a single fucking principle.

Why single out Iran? Is there any Muslim-majority country where members of other faiths can life freely? Copts in Egypt suffer continual persecution; forget about Jews in any Muslim country. Iraqi Christians (and other religions) suffer hugely. Pakistanis who are not Sunni suffer continually as well (Pakistan has a horrible apostasy law). There is not one Muslim country where it is safe to be a non-Muslim; and of course it is not safe to be a Shi'ite in a Sunni country, either.

The problem is not Iran; it is Islam which at its base is utterly intolerant and dangerous, as intolerant and dangerous as Naziism and Communism ever were.

Just throw them on the pile of all the other people executed in Iran for this that or the other. It doesn't matter since the news in the west is still pulling the Obama train to kiss their asses w/o any pre conditions. Iran knows that it is free to do literally whatever it wants and everyone will ignore it. Why? On the one hand no one wants them to set off a nuke and on the other, no one wants to be accused of being insufficiently sensitive (fireproof) of Islam. They ALREADY hang children in the streets w/o trial do you think shooting Christians in the back of the head in lots of 50 at the local soccer stadium will change anything?
