You welcome, Andrew Murphy.

Yes, Mogorth, Independent Voter and the US Republican Party in general seems to be determined to be like Napoleon's Old Guard at Waterloo;
They die, but do not surrender!

David All,

Thanks for the info on Truman.

Your wasting your time trying to explain logically the pitfalls in the GOP stratedgy to Mogorth and Indpeendent Voter, they think everything is great.

Independent Voter, please chill out. Please remember that white males are a minority in the US. The Republicans keep forgetting this which is why they have only won one (2004) of the last five Presidential Elections. Thanks to their anti-Hispanic stands, the only Republican elected to any statewide office in California in the last decade has been He-Man Arnold. The alienation of Hispanic voters by the Republicans fits their nativist history of always being against sucessive waves of non-Protestant immigrants from the Irish Catholics in the mid-19th Century to contemporary Hispanics.

Andrew Murphy: The 22nd Amendment limiting a President to two terms and no more than two years of another President's unfinished term did not apply to Truman since he was already President when the 22nd Amendment was ratified. Truman did run for re-nomination by the Democrats but dropped out of the race when he was defeated in an early Primary, (I think New Hampshire) by Senator Estes Kefauver, a liberal Democrat from Tennesse.

Gene

"Everything I’ve heard her say in the hearings" is meaningless, since
1. She is now saying whatever it takes to get confirmed
2. She has contradicted her past statements several times (both regarding race and regarding policy).

In other words, she's lying - yet another reason not to put her on SCOTUS.

She has ensured quite a few independent I know, vote Republican for the rest of their lives.

Mattera isn't a candidate for lifetime Supreme Court justice. Sotomayor is.

There is no altering the fact that - over a half-dozen times - she has stated that a Latina is inherently superior to a white male.

All that's missing from her philosophy is the white sheet of the KKK or the swastika.

A person who professes that one group is inherently superior to another has no place in a court system.

But getting Sotomayor on the SCOTUS will be a pyrrhic victory for the left, for it will indelibly associate thde left with hatred of white males.

There are three times as many white males in the USA, as Hispanics, and the presence of Sotomayor will push those white males even more heavily in the Republican direction.

I would say California has become better for the Democrats due to demographic changes more than anything else. In presidential elections the Republicans were helped by having Reagan and Nixon as candidates. They can still the governorship there though albeit it with a celebrity candidate who is more to the left than most Republicans.

As for New England, it has been the Republicans becoming too right wing for the voters there who were happy to vote for centerist type Republicans like the two current senators from Maine.

Bork is a legal positivist. I thought it was rather cleaver on the part of the Senate Judicary to investigate his movie rentals at Blockbuster. After all, Bork says there is no constitutional right to privacy, so sometimes you have to illustrate either in print or for real, the consequences of what people say.

Cominanarchy, I am not American but my partner is. The US Government defines Hispanic as "a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race." That's a very large number of white people. Oh, look. It includes Spain. Well, can you tell me, "WISE" guy - are there no white people in Spain, or is no-one in Spain Hispanic?

I have been surprised (I suppose naively) at pettiness around the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor.

Bork. *cough*.
