There were no Provos during the battle of bogside. There was only the IRA – the provos were an activist splitter faction who wanted to get more involved in hands-on operations IN RESPONSE to what was going on in NI, driven my their leftist ideology, which resulted in the collapse of the old IRA who were content to sit on their hands in the Republic.

Except that the Provos played a major role in provoking those riots. That was their strategy and that of their Campus Marxist friends. The aim was to drive a wedge between the Catholic population and the British State by, basically, encouraging the Protestants to attack the Catholics. Which is why 1505 Catholics had to flee homes they had no problems living in before the violence. It is also why the Provos did not lift a finger to protect Catholic communities during the Battle of the Bogside.

So this violence does not pre-date the Provos by any stretch of the imagination. The distinction between the Provos and the Official IRA was precisely that the PIRA had studied Marxist-Leninist terrorist campaigns elsewhere and understood they needed to provoke the sort of violence that would win them mass support.

The only mention of religion in the Treaty of Union is the exclusion of Catholics, and anyone married to a Catholic, from the throne. And it does read like they are excluded from the throne, not merely the succession.

Well, it is. At least according to the constitution and the number of nominal adherents. It is often said that there is a Muslim world, not just in a handy typographic sense for academic convenience, but also an objective reality. There are still plenty of Christians and followers of other religions in the area referred to as the Muslim world though.
