The sick-making Mr. Galloway

Here are his latest thoughts on the Iranian election and its tumultuous aftermath. Galloway offers his version of the pernicious cliché (he sneers at “the English speaking more liberal elites now on the streets demonstrating” and writes “This election almost mirrors the class composition of the recent polls in Venezuela. President Hugo Chavez has exactly the same friends in his country. And the same enemies.”). And he smugly predicts the outrage expressed by millions of Iranians “will soon fizzle out” as President Ahmadinejad embarks on a triumphant second term.

Well, George, Dr. Ahmadinejad’s finest are out on the streets as I write, doing all they can to make sure your prediction comes true.

A message to the brave people of Iran: add this to your list of reasons to keep on fighting.

Haha! Many working class people including the unemployed are out on the streets in Iran demonstrating against the government and Galloway supports the government position!

Could it be anything to do with the fact that Press TV, the Iranian sponsored channel, pay him? Could it also have anything to do with the fact that whatever is the correct moral position to take, one can guarantee that Galloway will take the opposite view?

What next from Galloway? Will he be saluting Ahmadinejad’s courage, strength and indefatigability?

What an unbelievable moron. There is no comparison between the two countries, the systems, or the religious brain washing. In this instance it’s the state that has the most powerful grip on the media.

I’m waiting for the seizing of PressTV HQ by Iranian dissidents. Galloway might just be a bit worried about the SAS storming the place. Accidents do happen now and then.

Gene,

In the name of God, why do you tell Iranians that George Galloway gives them more reason to fight? Can’t you write a post about Iran without discussing your crappy, Western, provincial Left-wing self-referential politics? Has it ever occurred to you that the sun doesn’t rise and set out of the asshole of Western Left-wing intramural politics?

Doctor Heath

Gene:

Sadly, it has never once occurred to self-referential, posturing left wing in the West that the sun does not rise out of its fundament.

I note that Ahmedinejad’s shills paraded in Tehran with anti-BBC banners, implying that – yes – their election was really about the West, neocons and Islam. His opponents, though, want democracy in Iran, freedom and, one supposes, competent government. How humiliating for the West’s soi-disant left and its radiant fundament.

Will TheIrie come again to tell us (like he did once here) that Iran is a democracy?

I remember that he got his ass kicked then.

There is no Islamist that TheIrie hasn’t sucked.

George is a great fan of the Soviet Union. The protestors supporting Ahmedinejad are mostly old guys with big moustaches – like Stalin – George must identify with them and with the Stalininst methods that are being used to crush dissent.

Ahmadinejad will have a lot to live up to in his second term. Can he go one better by fomenting another war in Lebanon; an even more destructive one in Gaza, and a more creative attempt at ridiculing the Holocaust than simply inititiating a cartoon contest poking fun at the murders of millions of Jews, Romanys, homosexuals and other Untermenschen?

Your basic point still holds of course.

Top tip – read what the SWP are actually saying before frothing about what you imagine they might say.

Who pays the piper calls the tune. How will Galloway explain away this when political change comes to Iran? Presumably, he’ll say that he has always opposed the regime, just as he always supposedly opposed Saddam.

I understand that the SWP official position is that they support revolutionary change in Iran, provided it is not imposed by “imperialism”. It’s just a shame that they have maligned or ignored nearly every opposition movement in Iran.

Oh dear! Looks like another dictator Galloway has been backing is crumbling. Who will pay his wages next? Looks like North Korea next but will they be able to afford his fees?

Here is a picture of the palace where Ahmadienjad’s Interior minister, the super wealthy Commander Mahsooli lives:

George is really going to be in trouble if Iran is liberated – how wonderful.

Meanwhile on “FarLeftRight Unity” the SWP and some of Respect are desparately trying to adjust their positions in view of what is likely to be a death blow to their “hug an Islamist” strategy. Its hilarious.

The SWP prevented Hands Off the People of Iran from joining STWC because they opposed the Iranian regime (in addition to opposing a war with Iran) and perhaps because it was supported by a rival communist sect. HOPOI is probably the closest position to the Iranian public: they don’t want war and they don’t want the regime. If STWC and others had taken this position from the outside, they would not look like raving fools now.

Ahmadinejad got over 60% when elected in 2005

He was polling over 60% of the vote before the election

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2009/jun/15/iran-election-polling

What a surprise that he got over 60% again!

I wouldn’t have voted for him, or any of the other candidates, but he is popular with working class Iranians whether you like it or not. One of the reasons he is popular is that he pisses off people like you.

p.s. Potkin is a supporter of the Pahlavis, who were famous for their democratic credentials, respect for human rights, love of the people and modest homes…

I remember seeing a poll published ahead of the European elections which showed that a third of the electorate was ‘considering’ voting Green. The Greens got around 8% in the end. Errant polls are always possible and there’s nothing to suggest that the

“I wouldn’t have voted for him, or any of the other candidates, but he is popular with working class Iranians whether you like it or not.”

He is not popular with the working class Iranians; in fact, there is a lot of regional and ethnic identification with the candidates. Karroubi and Rezaee are popular in the southwest because they are from this region, being ethnic Lori and Bakhtiari respectively. It was largely accepted that Karroubi would win the majority in his native Lorestan and come top of the poll in Khuzestan – as happened in 2005. In the end, his share of the vote was identical to the national average – that means that, suddenly, the regional differences that one expects in any election have magically vanished. In fact, both these candidates lost badly in their own hometowns; Ahmadinejad won an incredible 90%+ of the vote in Rezaee’s village! Then there is the case of Mousavi doing unexpectedly badly in Azeri areas, particularly Tabriz where he lost to Ahmadinejad. The results are just not credible. There is little regional differentiation in the votes that one normally expects. The only variation in the outcome was the turnout – in Kurdistan, turnout was around 62% and in Balochistan and Khuzestan it was around 73%, compared to the national average of 85%. The regional abstentionism shows that a sizeable number of ethnic minorities rejected all candidates, although official turnout in these areas was still higher than elections in the UK!
