Me -I am one of the clinics on the Golan -chief cook & bottlewasher -moi -solo! A peripetetic GP comes twice a week for a couple of hours , but all the rest of the time I’m on my own, as are all the nurses in the rural clinics. We don’t keep the snake antidotes on the premises -legally a doctor would have to give the order to administer it as it’s IV, so yes we have to go to Poriya or Tzfat. We don’t really have much to do with the military except for in war time or if I need a helicopter to extracate a hiker from a minefield or an errant hang-glider from the cliffs -lots of those I’m afraid! We used to have an ambulance in every settlement with volunteer drivers, but then MDA decided that wasn’t economic, so that service has been drastically reduced.

When I was working in Hatzrot Yasaf, you could choose mice or snakes, but not neither.

I prefer mice. I had to chase one Tom and Jerry style all around the floor. Hilarious.

Me – to be honest, snakes are the only thing I don’t like. Don’t mind scorpions, poisonous spiders or centipedes, but snakes…no way. We have loads of vipers (tsefa) where I live because of it being a rural area. After the wheat harvest when all the mice vacate the fields the snakes are always out in force and during the annual bush fires they escape to the residential area. I once lost 4 pedigree calves in a single night from one snake. The main confusion is between the viper and the matbeot snake which can look very similar, even though the latter is not venomous, and although on close inspection their heads are a different shape, I’m afraid that’s too close for comfort for me! We are a good 45/50 minutes from the nearest hospital which stocks the antidote, and having dealt with dozens of snake bite incidents I prefer to err on the side of caution.

I thought nurses were not supposed to be squeamish.
Remember, in the Middle East:
Zigzag lines = viper = venomous.
Alternating white/black/red/green/yellow bands, or a tail-end rattle = venomous but you are on acid, dreaming or on a different continent.
(Same for non-venomous but still deadly 15-foot snakes as thick as your thigh).
Otherwise, you should be quite safe.

Indeed this is yet another brilliant bit of invention by the IDF, but I’ve been thinking about its sustainability. If the people the snake is spying on are anything like me, the first thing they’ll do is chop its head off with a spade. My partner always gets mad and goes into long explanations about the declining populations of various types of snake, but my gut reaction when I see wiggly things is to chop first and ask questions later.

I think this is a brilliant invention. Do you think the IDF will sell it on infomercials (do you have those in the UK?) and if you act now you also get a set of Ginzu knives just for shipping and handling?

I would buy one. I have a teenage son who has a very beautiful girlfriend, and this would allow me to check up on them without them knowing. They don’t close his door upstairs for nothing, you know. I would have to repaint it, though. My upstairs hall is decorated in dust, not camoflage.
