Note to the Telegraph: an AK-47 is not a machine gun, and hasn't seen much use since the 1950s. More likely he was holding an AKM or AK-74 (which is what Soviet troops in Afghanistan were using).

UK Quakers are a bit different from UK Unitarians (and a bit different from Quakers in the US as far as I know too): in a strange (and very positive) way they are rather more catholic.

It is undoubtedly true however that the RSOF's inability to possess the completeness of the Christian faith does result in a certain detachment; and also true that Quakerism, at least in the big cities of England (which is not really where the RSOF has been traditionally or historically strongest) can be a bit out-of-touch and middle-class.

However, the most important point is this: allowing Begg to speak does not constitute an ENDORSEMENT. Our Lord mingled with taxmen and prostitutes, Shunning those one disagrees with or disapporves of is not only un-Christian, it is vile and anti-Christian.

Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and water boarding have provided huge propaganda victories to the Jihadists.
Whatever Begg's past, his treatment will lend him credibility, however undeserved.
I know it is a tedious truism, but : "When in a hole, stop digging".

I have no idea what the world view of Quakers in the UK is but it appears at first blush to be fairly similar to the views of upper middle class white suburban Americans who occasionally go to Unitarian fellowship meetings, possibly dabbled in Buddhism, wife swapping and light drug use at some point. Oh yes aren't those dusky foreigners charming, we live in a big big multicultural world. Did you like the hummus they served?

He probably had them so he could watch bats and owls at night. or so he could keep track of the goings-on inside cars at certain notorious places of assignation.

"What jolly japes when a brown person stockpiles weapons."

I thought people got all excited in your country when white people stockpile weapons too. Supposedly there are laws against owning weapons or some such.

The only use I know of for night vision goggles is for hunting deer at night and for military operations, as in shooting police. Again, I thought there wasn't much deer hunting these days in Britain and you had to be "the right kind of people" to do it. OTOH, there are some plant species that flower at night, the night-blooming cereus for instance, so maybe that's what he wanted them for.

Those words wouldn't have been used by not a few Quakers, Ben, but there are 'concerns'.

From the Telegraph article:

“The items they [the police] took had nothing to do with al-Qa’eda or anybody. They were entirely innocent. If I have night-vision goggles does that make me a suspected member of al-Qaeda?”

When asked about the flak jacket that was seized, Mr Begg said that his son was merely indulging a “hobby” - which included collecting weapons. “He liked to collect things like that since his childhood. Once upon a time I had a cellar and he had a lot of arms and things like that.”

What jolly japes when a brown person
stockpiles weapons.

Next year, the guests will include Andy McNab and a Trident commander.

This is a brilliant take-down of Begg. Congratulations to Habibi, who has made the effort to put together a comprehensive rebuttal of Begg's soi-disant "peace" credentials.

Why people are prepared to bend over backwards in favour of this reactionary bastard's lies is quite beyond me.

Harold Hamlet

What crimes do you think Begg has commited and got away with?"

Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide
Article 3
The following acts shall be punishable:

    * (c) Direct and public incitement to commit genocide;

This is the 'Joseph Goebbels' provision and was used against Simon Bikindi of Rwanda. i quote the official record

“Simon Bikindi used a public address system to state that the majority population, the Hutu, should rise up to exterminate the minority, the Tutsi,”

Game, set and match.
