PA dismantles W. Bank youth orchestra

“Palestinian authorities disbanded a youth orchestra from a West Bank refugee camp after it played for a group of Holocaust survivors in Israel, a local official said on Sunday.

Adnan Hindi of the Jenin camp called the Holocaust a “political issue” and accused conductor Wafa Younis of unknowingly dragging the children into a political dispute.

He added that Younis has been barred from the camp and the apartment where she taught the 13-member Strings of Freedom orchestra has been boarded up. ”

This “Jenin refugee camp” is nothing of the sort. It IS a slum, plain and simple. Nowhere else in the world but in the WB and Gaza does one refer to people 60 years down the line as “refugees”.

Gene -very true; not everything in Jenin is wonderful or awful. Like anywhere else in the world it has good and bad, but seeing as the Western media appear to be intent on only showing the bad, I think people have a right to see the other side too.
I could go to any city such as London or NY and take photos of slums, homeless people, prostitutes, victims of street stabbings etc. and present that as a portrait of the place, but we all know it’s not a complete picture.
Same with Jenin or any other place.

Monty; given that the Hebrew word for nurse might be a bit problematic in translation, that’s fine!

I’ve never been to Palestine, I’m never going there, but perhaps someone can tell me what it’s like, how they live, and the burdens they have to endure.

If you are not Israeli, you can go and visit anywhere on the West Bank except perhaps IDF bases. You can go to Jenin and examine for yourself the sanitary conditions there and in all other West Bank towns and cities.

I am not sure about Gaza. Hamas is not interested in un-bigoted persons visiting as they may stumble upon certain areas in Gaza where rich people live or where they are training people and storing weapons for ‘freedom fighting’.
