Sorry, Nick (SA), what I meant was that even if the people against whom the anti-apartheid protesters were acting had been Dutch they, unlike Israelis, would have had another state to go to. Of course they didn’t have European passports and they weren’t Dutch: it’s only the brainless, ignorant racism of VoR+ that thinks that white people in Southern Africa must all be Dutch.

NO -I quite agree of course, but you know how Anglos can be :)
If you marry another english speaking person, read the JP and spend your life on a mostly english speaking kibbutz then it’s pretty easy to avoid speaking Hebrew.

Not so, most white South Africans do not have any European passport. They and descendants of folks who have been living in SA for hundreds of years.

There are plenty who have and are leaving SA, perhaps 1 million whites or 20% of the white population since 1994. Most of these are able to get into the UK, Australian, New Zealand, North America and Canada on the strength of their qualifications.

Steph -you’re right of course; it’s very difficult to uproot one’s life and move to an unknown country with a different language and culture. I did it when I was young and before I had any children, which is easier -I think the older you get the harder it is. Mind you I had until a few years ago two patients in my practice who made made aliyah from the UK well into their 80s!
On the other hand there are so many positive things too. The weather, the food, the fact that you’ll never have to put up with anti-Semitism ever again, the fact that it’s so much easier to celebrate the holidays and the culture. The fact that your kids grow up naturally Jewish and proud of it and so much more..
Actually, if you’re a native english speaker it’s much easier to get along in Israel than with any other language. I personally prefer to speak Hebrew, but I have a lot of English & American friends who hardly speak Hebrew at all, despite having been in the country for 40+ years!
