My people are German Jews. I was raised in a German Jewish refugee milieu in the United States. A lot of German Jews got out. I once asked my father about it, and he said that because of the Nuremburg Laws many of the Jews who could travel did leave, but the communities in the Slavic countries got it in the neck because they couldn’t believe that they had anything to fear from the civilized Germans. For those people, trouble had always come from the east, and what the Germans had in store for them (us) was beyond comprehension. And, then, of course, it was too late.

These days people talk about the Shoah, but when I was a child no one talked. We children learned to listen to whispers and sighs, and to pay attention to stray sentences to discover what had happened to our families. Even later, my father wouldn’t talk. I know his father was arrested on Kristallnacht, and was in jail or a holding camp for a month. I know that his brothers and brothers-in-law got together and bribed someone to get my grandfather released, but I only know that because my father, many years later, saw a relative in Argentina and he reported that he had cut that man dead. When asked, he said that the so-and-so (I am not being coy, my father did not swear in front of us) had refused to help my grandfather. When asked about it later, my father stonewalled. In my experience, this was common among our parents.

I was long married and a mother before my father would admit to me that some of our elderly (and one not so elderly) relatives had been murdered. I, myself, refused to discuss the Shoah with my own children until they were at least ten years old – it is a huge burden for small children, and knowledge of this comes soon enough.

Perhaps someone else has the exact figures of German Jewish, as compared with other Jewish, murders. And I do not use the term “Holocaust,” because in the United States the anti-choice brigade have co-opted the term to refer to abortion, which is beyond infuriating, so I use HaShoah because we are discussing real people.
