Or maybe that should be "responsibilidad" not "contabilidad" referring to responsibility rather than accounts in an auditing sense...

"In the case of Cuba, one can support reforms but prefer they are devised and carried out by a democratic Cuban government rather than the IMF, US or any other body not accountable to the Cuban people."

Donde esta este gobierno democratico cubano que mencionas? Todo lo que veo es una dictadura sin contabilidad.

Where is this democratic Cuban government that you speak of Benjamin? All I see is a dictatorship without accountability...

Well Benji perhaps you should change your blog from saucerfulofsecrets to ShadesOfGray, and you can blather on about how on the one hand this, but on the other hand that, and of course you are a cautious supporter, although at the same time critical, of some modest middle way, while at the same time being alert to the possibility that indeed other people might see things differently.

a large segment of the Left has not changed since Orwell in the 1940s described them as wanting to be anti-Fasicst without being anti-Totaltarian

Hi David. It probably appears "large" if that who you ever focus on and then happily throw in as many in that category as possible.

For example its possible to be wary of some of Chavez's actions, but support some of his reforms; whilst at the same time being suspicious of some of Chavez's opposition (considering past actions) especially if they are funded by foreign taxpayers (illegal in the US).

In the case of Cuba, one can support reforms but prefer they are devised and carried out by a democratic Cuban government rather than the IMF, US or any other body not accountable to the Cuban people. As for some of the anti-Castro people in Florida, I would run a mile, and they are just as capable as lying profusely as the Cuban regime.

Shades of gray - not popular with Decents or communists alike.

South Floridian: It is indeed sickening that Cuba has moved full circle. In the pre-Castro days it was called the brothel of the Americas. Now as the Castros hang on after the collaspe of their Soviet patron, Cuba has once again become an international whorehouse. Only difference nowdays is the absence of the Americanos, the tourists being either Canadian or European.

Sarah Franco: I am afraid that the attiudes of a large segment of the Left has not changed since Orwell in the 1940s described them as wanting to be anti-Fasicst without being anti-Totaltarian, i.e. being against Communism as well.

mesquito: Thanks for linking to the Mother Jones article, glad to see that not all the Left is blind to the evils of the Castro regime. The response of the pro-Castro apologists was rather funny in a same things never change sort of way. Mother Jones is pretty leftist, but tends to be fair minded. A fine article several years ago about Our Saint Rachel of the Gaza Strip, her real activities and those of her ISM comrades upset the extreme Leftists quite a bit, as well.

Its ironic really. The US implements an idiotic sanctions regime against Cuba, but has normal, open relationships with China. Cuba is far from perfect, and I support political and economic reform (although not dictated by the US or others), but its human rights record is far superior to China's, and its state less repressive than China's. However, the one with a better record is treated like a pariah, while the other is treated quite normally. So, not really that much to do with human rights really.

On the other hand, one of our persistent commenters assures us that “Cuba is changing.”

Yes. You read the papers, Gene, so you must know this is the case.
