<i>"Naturally far be it from me to gloat…</i>

It's only gloatable if it implies he acted alone as some sort of loner psychopath who hatched the plot on his own. The rest of the story strongly suggests that this wasn't the case. Nor was it the case with a similar incident last month with almost identical circumstances.

If the plan to detonate a bomb was hatched with others, and the instructions on building a bomb were obtained with the help of others, and encouragement to go through with the action came from others, this is sufficient to suggest a new trend of recruiting the mentally vulnerable for suicide bombing missions. And this is something to be worried about.

What would be reassuring news would be to learn that he was a lone psychopath and that the earlier case with almost identical circumstances - and also in Exeter - was pure coincidence.

But From today's guardian:
Reilly bungled assembling the bomb which he is believed to have built himself.

Well whether or not riley was radicalised by care workers it'll still be something new to add to the enhanced CRB checks for people applying to work with vulnerable persons. What interesting times we get to live in.

More on the Elephant:

Several people today are quoting Sen Joe Lieberman's recent speech in which he quoted former US Sec. of State Dean Acheson (I don't know whether its from his memoirs "Present at the Creation" or not, I'm not at home or near a library--so can't consult a copy) as saying: "No people in history have ever survived, who thought they could protect their freedoms by making themselves inoffensive to their enemies."

Exactly! The phrase "whistling past the graveyard" also comes to mind.

Its difficult to imagine why Exeter? What's wrong with staying in Plymouth, Surely an outrage in Plymouth is worth the same as one in Exeter. Maybe there IS something about the Giraffe chain that stimulates Islamic Terrorism.

Maybe its Exeter which should really be called Sexeter, a place of neo-con imperialism at the heart of Zionism where excess cream teas become the stimulus for Western decadent sex orgies. Or maybe not!

But why Exeter? Why travel 40 miles on a bus with maybe three explosive devices?
