"I live in a country where I cannot understand much of the language, and some of the cultural practices are very different from mine. I can adapt to all these situations and it does not stop me from identifying with the people, the Chinese - not as people with the same culture or language as me - but as human beings, and thus with quite fundamental and profound commonalities. Thus culture, language and "race" are not unsurmountable barriers."

You are kidding yourself, Benjamin. The underlying human being sans language, sans culture is a mythic being. He or she don't exist.

"Thus culture, language and "race" are not unsurmountable barriers."

Who mentioned "race?" This is a red herring.

CUlture nd language differences are far more important than "race." They are what humans are made of. "Race" is just a fictive element that like the "human being" sans culture and language doesn't exist.
